We were deeply concerned to learn about the antisemitic situation at the University of Toronto this past week. The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union rejected a Jewish student’s request that they endorse Hillel’s efforts to bring kosher food options to campus, advising that the student remove Hillel’s name from the motion, since the UTGSU couldn’t partner with an organization that advocates for Israel and stands against the Boycott Divest and Sanctions movement. The UTGSU allowed their political views on Israel to affect their support for Jewish students’ access to campus services. Holding individual Jews responsible for the actions of the State of Israel is one of the very definitions of antisemitism We are pleased to hear that the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union has finally taken responsibility for the antisemitism at play in their response to the kosher food campaign and that they are undertaking to educate themselves about antisemitism in all its forms.
